Plantertainer for Android – how the app handles your data, with banner advertising and without accounts.
In short
- Plantertainer has no user accounts, no backend server and no cloud sync. Your plants, care history, reminders, settings and photos are stored only on your device.
- We, the developer, never receive your plant data. There is no user database, and no way for us to read what you store in the app.
- The only third party that processes data through this app is Google, through the AdMob advertising SDK that serves the banner on the Home and Plant List screens.
- Advertising may use your device’s advertising ID and your IP address to select and measure ads. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland you are asked for consent before any ad is requested, and you can change that choice at any time in Settings -> Manage ad privacy options.
- We do not sell personal data, we run no analytics or crash-reporting SDK, and we do not track you in other apps or on other websites.
- The Paid edition (
com.quailoop.plantertainer.paid) contains no ads, no advertising SDK, no consent screen and no internet permission.
Contents
1. Who we are
Plantertainer is developed and published by QLS Konrad Przepiórzyński (Quailoop Software), ul. Arbuzowa 5/3, 54-054 Wrocław, Poland, EU VAT PL8121879099. For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, Article 4(7)) we are the data controller for the app itself. You can reach us at developer@quailoop.com.
2. Scope of this policy
This policy covers the Free edition of the Plantertainer Android app (com.quailoop.plantertainer), which displays one advertising banner. It is published at this address so that it can be linked from the Google Play store listing.
The Paid edition (com.quailoop.plantertainer.paid) is a separate app. It ships without the advertising SDK, without the advertising permissions and without any consent flow, so sections 6, 10 and 11 below do not apply to it. Everything else – local storage, photos, permissions and your rights – applies to both editions.
3. Data stored on your device
Everything you enter in Plantertainer stays in the app’s private storage on your device:
- rooms, plant profiles (name, species, notes, cover photo, care schedule),
- care tasks, completed care actions and care history,
- reminders and notification preferences,
- app settings (language, theme, notification options),
- photo files you add from the camera or the gallery.
This data is held in a local database and in app-private files. We do not receive a copy of it, we cannot access it, and no server of ours stores it. Android’s own cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are explicitly disabled for the app, so your plant data is not copied into your Google account by the operating system either.
4. Permissions and why we ask for them
| Permission | Edition | Why it is requested |
|---|---|---|
INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE |
Free only | Required by the advertising SDK to load the banner. The app itself sends no plant data over the network. |
CAMERA |
Both | Only to take a photo of a plant when you tap the camera button. The camera is never used in the background. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS |
Both | To show your own care reminders on Android 13 and later. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED |
Both | To reschedule your reminders after the device restarts or the clock or time zone changes. |
Plantertainer does not request access to your location, contacts, calendar, SMS, call logs, microphone, files or general media library, and it does not read the advertising ID itself.
5. Photos
When you add a photo, the image you picked or captured is copied into the app’s private storage and re-encoded: it is scaled down to at most 1920 pixels on the longer side and saved as a JPEG. EXIF metadata – including any GPS coordinates, device model or timestamp written by your camera – is discarded in that process. Photos are never uploaded, shared or analysed by us.
6. Advertising in the Free edition (Google AdMob)
The Free edition integrates Google AdMob (com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads) and Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP), which manages advertising consent. Exactly one adaptive banner is shown, on the Home screen and on the Plant List screen. There are no full-screen, interstitial, rewarded, video or native ads, and no banner appears in Add/Edit, Plant Details, Care History, Rooms, photo flows or Settings.
For the purpose of serving and measuring that banner, Google may process:
- your Android advertising ID and other device or app identifiers,
- your IP address (from which a coarse, city-level location can be inferred),
- device and app information (device model, operating system version, language, app version),
- ad interactions (impressions, clicks, how long an ad was displayed),
- technical diagnostics about the ad request.
These data are used to deliver ads, to measure and report their performance, to limit how often you see the same ad, to prevent fraud and abuse, and – only if you consent – to personalise ads based on your interests.
Legal basis
Where consent is required (EEA, UK and Switzerland), personalised advertising and the storage of, or access to, information on your device are based on your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a) together with the ePrivacy Directive). Where consent is not required, the processing described in Google’s own policies is based on Google’s legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
Your consent choice
On first launch, Google’s consent form is presented before any ad is requested, and nothing is loaded from the advertising SDK until consent permits it. You can review or change your choice at any time in the app: Settings -> Manage ad privacy options (shown in regions where the consent requirement applies). Refusing personalised ads does not remove any app feature.
Other opt-outs
You can reset or delete your advertising ID and turn off ad personalisation in Android (Settings -> Privacy -> Ads) and in your Google account at adssettings.google.com.
Who is responsible
Google acts as an independent data controller for much of this advertising processing. We do not receive any identifiable information from AdMob – only aggregate performance statistics (for example impression counts and revenue) that cannot be traced back to you. For questions about Google’s own processing, please use the links in section 16.
7. What we do not do
- No account, e-mail address, phone number or name is required or collected.
- No analytics, attribution, crash-reporting or advertising SDK other than the AdMob/UMP pair described above – there is no Firebase, no Google Analytics, no crash reporter and no push notification service.
- No plant data, care history, reminder or photo is transmitted anywhere, at any time, by the app.
- We do not sell, rent or trade personal data, and we do not build profiles of users.
- No advertising SDK and no internet permission exist in the Paid edition.
8. Backups that you create yourself
In Settings you can export a backup archive: a ZIP file containing your plant data as JSON, your photo files and your settings. The file is written to the location you choose in the Android file picker and is imported back the same way. This export stays entirely under your control and is not uploaded to us or to any service. Anyone who obtains that file can read your plant data, so store and share it as you would a photo album.
9. How long data is kept
Local app data is kept for as long as you keep it: delete individual plants or photos in the app, clear the app’s data in Android settings, or uninstall the app, and it is gone. There is no copy on our side, so nothing has to be requested from us. Advertising data is retained by Google according to its own retention rules (see section 16).
10. Your rights
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Poland that authority is the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (Prezes Urzędu Ochrony Danych Osobowych), ul. Stawki 2, 00-193 Warszawa, uodo.gov.pl.
Because we hold no personal data about you, most requests are fulfilled directly on your device (export, delete, uninstall, change the ad consent setting) or by Google for advertising data. We will still answer any question or request you send to developer@quailoop.com, normally within 30 days.
11. United States – California and similar laws
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising on our own behalf. The advertising described in section 6 is operated by Google: personalisation depends on the consent choice you make in the app (where offered) and on Google’s own controls. You can limit interest-based advertising using the in-app ad privacy options, Google Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com) and by resetting or deleting your advertising ID in Android settings. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data.
12. Children
Plantertainer is a plant-care app for general use. Neither edition has an account, a profile, a social feature or an age field, so there is nothing in the app that a child could fill in with personal details, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Paid edition (Plantertainer Pro). This edition ships without the advertising SDK, without advertising permissions and without the internet permission, so it sends nothing off the device. There is therefore no personal data for us or anyone else to collect, and the app is suitable for use by children, including children under 13, under the supervision of a parent or guardian. This is the edition we recommend for children.
Free edition. This edition displays advertising delivered by Google AdMob, which processes device data (including the advertising identifier) as described in sections 6 and 10. We do not direct the Free edition at children under 13 (under 16 in the EEA and the UK), and we do not ask Google to serve child-directed advertising. Parents and guardians who want a child to use Plantertainer should install the Paid edition, or limit advertising on the device with the controls listed in section 6.
This section also covers the United States: in line with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) we do not collect personal information from children under 13 in either edition.
If a parent or guardian believes that a child has provided personal data to us, they can write to developer@quailoop.com and we will look into it and delete anything we hold. In practice the app keeps all content on the device and we hold no user data at all.
13. Security
Your data benefits from the Android application sandbox: app-private files and databases are not readable by other apps, and on modern devices they are additionally protected by file-based encryption and your screen lock. The only network traffic generated by the Free edition is the ad SDK’s, over encrypted HTTPS connections. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure: anyone with physical access to an unlocked device, or with root access to it, can read the app’s files – which is why backups you export should be kept somewhere safe.
14. International transfers
Google may process advertising data outside the EEA, mainly in the United States, relying on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and/or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses. Details are described in Google’s privacy policy.
15. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, we will publish a new version of this page with a new effective date before the change takes effect, and we will describe material changes in the app’s Google Play release notes. The current version is always the one published at this address.
